The Level is the instrument of horizontal equanimity; it tests whether different domains, relationships, or aspects of work are being held with comparable care, without one consistently dominating the others.
The Lenses
- Intrinsic (Personal):The mental faculty that perceives favoritism, neglect, or imbalance across the domains and relationships one is responsible for.
- Extrinsic (Interpersonal):The relational practice of meeting others on equal ground regardless of status, role, or personal affinity.
- Integrative (Systemic):Systems fail when one dimension is persistently privileged over others; the level catches this before it produces structural failure.
The ARAA Sequence
Awareness — When to Use This Symbol
When one relationship, domain, or aspect of work is being favored at the expense of others, or when the same standard is not being applied across comparable situations.
Reflection — Diagnostic Questions
- Am I applying the same standard across all the domains I am responsible for?
- Which relationships or aspects of my work am I neglecting?
- What does genuine equanimity require here?
Analysis — Failure Modes
- Overuse (False Equivalence):insisting on identical treatment in situations that are genuinely different, producing injustice in the name of fairness.
- Underuse (Persistent Imbalance):allowing one domain to consistently dominate, degrading the others through neglect.
Action — Use It Now
Identify one relationship or domain that is receiving less care than it deserves; take one specific action to restore balance this week.
